Our Philosphy

Our mission is the encouragement of youth to explore the wonders, challenges, and rewards of dance while developing technical excellence and an individual artistry within each dancer.

Whether you are pursing dance as a professional or for recreational purposes for either you or your child, SAFD offers classes designed to meet your goals. SAFD offers classes in pre-ballet, classical ballet, pointe, variations, jazz, tap, modern, contemporary, musical theatre and adult fitness. The highly qualified instructors are committed to each student at each level, and follow a specific syllabus designed by artistic director, Lisa Hall McKee. SAFD produces a high caliber of artistic and technical excellence in it's young students and many haven been accepted to prestigious summer dance programs including Joffrey Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Lines, Jacobs Pillow, the Rock, Atlanta Ballet, Nashville Ballet and Ballet Magnificat. Some have continued to professional status, gaining their degrees from dance programs such as George Mason University, Point Park, Radford University, Cincinnati Conservatory, New York University and many others. SAFD performs annually at the Tennessee Theatre and is the home of GO! Contemporary Dance Works, a non-profit contemporary ballet and aerial arts dance company.

From the Director

"Dance is for everybody. It's for the young, old, big, small. Our philosophy is to teach it correctly and motivate our students to love dance and the work that it entails. We focus on providing superior instruction in an energetic, encouraging environment. Every individual is different, and we encourage our dancers to celebrate that, discover what their body is capable of, and help them achieve their goals without worrying where their peers are. Dance is an individual sport taught in a group environment. It does not matter to me if a student only takes dance for recreation. I still want them to learn dance correctly and safely, love it and appreciate it. It is something that will carry with them their whole life. It is a discipline that is a life skill. What is great and unique about our program is that we have a highly qualified staff which ensures correct, safe and creative teaching methods. We are dance educators. The majority of our students dance just because they love it, but many have professional aspirations, and it is our job to ensure they are prepared."
